Hört man den Namen „Lindau“, fällt einem sofort die kleine Inselstadt im südlichen Teil des Bodensees ein. Die romantische Altstadt, eine prächtige Hafeneinfahrt und ein wunderbarer Seeblick machen diese kleine Stadt zu einem beliebten Ausflugsziel.
Auch mich zog es diesen Sommer erneut in die über 1000 Jahre alte Inselstadt Lindau. Nach dem obligatorischen Stadtrundgang suchte ich mir ein gemütliches Plätzchen unter einem der zahlreichen Lindenbäume am Seeufer und lies den Tag entspannt ausklingen. Was für ein wunderschöner Ort!
As soon as you hear the name „Lindau“, you will instantly think about the little island city in the southern part of Lake Constance. The romantic historical center, a great harbor entrance and a wonderful lake view make this little city to a popular destination.
This summer, together with many tourists, I made a trip to the more than 1000 years old island city of Lindau. After the obligatory city walk, I closed the day relaxing under one of the many linden trees on the lakefront. What a beautiful place!
Was gibt es auf der Inselstadt Lindau zu sehen:
Im Süden der Inselstadt Lindau befindet sich die wohl bekannteste Sehenswürdigkeit. Der große Hafen. Hier starten die Ausflugsboote zu ihren Rundfahrten auf dem Bodensee.
Gerahmt wird die Hafeneinfahrt von zwei besonderen Bauwerken:
Auf der westlichen Haufenmauer erblickst Du den neuen Leuchtturm von Lindau. Dieser ist 33 Meter hoch und der südlichste Leuchtturm Deutschlands. Von seiner Aussichtsplattform hast Du einen schönen Blick auf die Stadt, den Bodensee und die Alpen.
Auf der östlichen Hafenmauer thront ein 6 Meter hoher „Bayrischer Löwe“ aus Marmor.
Der Leuchtturm und der Löwe stammen aus dem Jahr 1856 und sind seitdem die Wahrzeichen von Lindau.
What to see on the island city of Lindau:
The best-known sight is located in the southern part of the island city of Lindau. The main harbor. From this place sightseeing boats depart to their tours on Lake Constance.
Two special buildings frame the harbor entrance:
There is the new lighthouse of Lindau on the western harbor wall. It is 33 meters high and the most southern lighthouse in Germany. Enjoy a beautiful view across the city, Lake Constance and the Alps from its viewing platform.
A 6 meters high marble „Bavarian Lion“ sculpture dominates the eastern harbor wall.
The lighthouse and the lion were built in 1856. Since then, they are the landmarks of Lindau.
Lindau hat mehrere kleine Yachthäfen. Vor allem im Sommer findest Du dort zahlreiche Sport- und Segelboote. Einige dieser Boote können für einen Ausflug auf den Bodensee angemietet werden.
Lindau has several small yacht harbors. There you will find a large number of motor and sailing boats, especially in the summer. You want to take a trip across Lake Constance on your own? Some of these boats are available for rent!
Der historische „Mangturm“ ist einer der ältesten Leuchttürme am Bodensee. Betrieben wurde er von 1180 bis 1300. Er befindet sich an der Seepromenade des großen Hafens und war Teil der Stadtbefestigung. Mit einer Höhe von 20 Metern überragt er noch heute Gebäude in seiner unmittelbaren Umgebung.
The historical „Mangturm“ is one of the oldest lighthouses at Lake Constance. It was operated from 1180 until 1300 and is located at the promenade of the main harbor, where it was part of the city fortification. Until today, with a high of 20 meters, it surpasses buildings in its immediate surrounding.
Am westlichen Ende der Altstadt steht der „Diebsturm“. Im Jahre 1380 wurde der 35 Meter hohe Turm als Teil der Stadtbefestigung errichtet. Anschließend diente er als Wachturm und Gefängnis. Dieses markante Bauwerk mit seinem in 14 verschiedenen Farben gedeckten Ziegeldach ist ein echtes Schmuckstück.
The „Diebsturm“ is located at the western end of the historical center. The 35 meters high tower was built in 1380 as part of the city fortification and served as guard tower and prison. With its tiled roof in 14 different colors, this prominent building is a real gem.
Ein ehemaliges Zunfthaus der Lindauer Bäcker ist die „Brodlaube“ aus dem Jahr 1370. Sie steht in der Maximilianstraße und ist nur eines der zahlreichen gut erhaltenen Handwerkerhäuser aus dem 16. und 17. Jahrhundert.
The „Brodlaube“, built in 1370, is a former guild house owned by the bakers of Lindau. It is located at the Maximilianstraße and just one of the numerous well-preserved craftsmen’s houses from the 16th and 17th century.
Das Rathaus von Lindau ist das prächtigste Gebäude in der Lindauer Altstadt. Erbaut wurde es von 1422 bis 1436 an der Maximilianstraße und wurde im Laufe der Zeit mehrfach umgebaut. Dadurch weist es die Baustile mehrerer Epochen auf. Besonders auffällig ist die üppige Malerei auf der Südseite des Gebäudes. Sie stellt die Lindauer Stadtgeschichte dar.
The town hall of Lindau is the most gorgeous building in the historical center. It is located at the Maximilianstraße and was built from 1422 until 1436. It shows architectural styles of several eras because it was modified several times in the course of time. Of particular note is the painting on the south-facing façade of the building. It shows the city history of Lindau.
Auf dem Marktplatz von Lindau findest Du folgende Kirchen:
Münster „Unserer Lieben Frau“: Die Ursprünge dieser Kirche gehen auf das Jahr 810 zurück. Ihren aktuellen Namen erhielt sie jedoch erst im Jahr 2002. In Inneren findest Du barocke Deckenmalerei und rot-golden verzierte Innenausstattung im Rokoko-Stil.
Stadtkirche „St. Stephan“: Diese Kirche stammt aus dem 12. Jahrhundert. Ihre Besonderheit ist das 200 Jahre alte Gestühl mit umklappbaren Rücklehnen für eine bessere Sicht auf den Altar.
You will find the following churches at the Marktplatz of Lindau:
Minster „Unserer Lieben Frau“: The origins of this church date back to the year 810. However, it got its current name in 2002. Inside you will find baroque ceiling frescos and a red-golden rococo-style interior.
Church of „St. Stephan“: This church was built in the 12th century. Its special feature is the more than 200 years old pews, which can be fold down for a better view of the altar.
In der Fischergasse kann man besonders gut die farbenfrohen historischen Bürgerhäuser der Lindauer Altstadt bewundern.
The Fischergasse in the historical center of Lindau is the perfect place to admire the colorful historical town houses.

Der moderne viergeschossige Rundbau wurde im Jahr 2000 errichtet und ersetzt das Holzgebäude aus den 50er Jahren. Seine großflächige Glasfassade erlaubt Dir einen einzigartigen Blick hinaus auf den Bodensee.

The modern four-story circular building was built in the year 2000 and replaces the wooden building from the 50s. Its large-scale glass façade offers you a spectacular view across Lake Constance.
In unmittelbarer Nähe zur Spielbank liegt der Lindauer Stadtgarten. Er ist eine Oase der Ruhe und geschmückt mit zahlreichen exotischen Pflanzen.
Ein Modell am Rande des Stadtgartens zeigt wie sich die Stadt Lindau um 1800 präsentierte.
Right next to the casino you will find the city garden of Lindau. It is a haven of calm and planted with numerous exotic plants.

Tip: Die Insel Lindau erreichst Du bequem mit dem Auto, der Bahn oder dem Fernbus. Wenn Du mit dem Auto anreist, kannst Du Dein Fahrzeug auf dem großen Inselparkplatz „P5“ abstellen. Die Tagesgebühr beträgt dort 7€.
Tip: You reach the island of Lindau in comfort with a car, the train or the bus. If you arrive by car, you can park your car at the big island parking lot „P5“. The daily fee is 7€.
