Lagos kann auf über 2000 Jahre Geschichte zurückblicken und ist damit eine der faszinierendsten und interessantesten Städte der Algarve.
Besonders die Seefahrt brachte Lagos Reichtum und Wohlstand. Im 15. Jahrhundert begannen hier einige sehr erfolgreiche portugiesische Entdeckungs- und Eroberungsfahrten über die Weltmeere. Heute spiegelt sich diese reiche Vergangenheit in den zahlreichen baulichen Sehenswürdigkeiten der Stadt wieder.
Lagos kannst Du bequem zu Fuß erkunden. Was es Schönes zu sehen gibt, siehst Du im Folgenden:
Lagos can look back to 2000 years of history and is therefore one of the most fascinating and interesting cities of the Algarve.
Especially the seafaring brought wealth and prosperity to Lagos. In the 15th century, some of Portugals most successful journeys of discovery and conquest across the ocean started here. Today, numerous architectural sights reflect this prestigious past of the city.
You can easily explore Lagos by foot. In the following, you can see how beautiful this city is:
Altstadt
Verwinkelte Gassen, große und kleine Plätze, eine große Einkaufsstraße sowie zahlreiche Restaurants prägen die Altstadt von Lagos.
Der Charme vergangener Zeiten ist auch heute noch zu spüren. Die für Portugal typischen Bilder aus Keramikfliesen „Azulejos“ sind dafür Zeugnis. Sie verzieren ganze Hausfassaden und verdeutlichen den einstigen Reichtum der Bürger als Lagos noch Hauptstadt des Königreiches Algarve war.
Auch ein Blick auf den Boden lohnt sich! Die Oberflächen vieler Straßen und Plätze sind mit farbigen Pflastersteinen verziert, die in kunstvollen Mustern und Motiven verlegten wurden.
Historical center
Winding alleys, large and small squares, a shopping street and numerous restaurants characterize the historical center of Lagos.
Until today, the charm of past times can be felt. In particular due to artworks which are made of ceramic tiles and called „Azulejos“. They are typical for Portugal. They decorate entire house facades and show the former wealth of the residents when Lagos was the capital of the Kingdom of the Algarve.
It is also worth to take a look at the floor! The surfaces of many streets and squares are decorated with colorful cobblestones, which are laid in artistic patterns.
Igreja de Santo António
Die im Jahre 1707 errichtete Kirche „Igreja de Santo António“ zählt zu den schönsten Kirchen des Landes. Ihren Innenraum schmücken vergoldete Holzschnitzereien im Barockstil und eine aufwändig bemalte Holzdecke.

Praça Infante Dom Henrique
Der „Praça Infante Dom Henrique“ ist der geschichtsträchtigste Platz in Lagos. Seinen Namen erhielt er von Heinrich dem Seefahrer, der seine Entdeckungsreisen in ferne Länder von Lagos aus startete. Anlässlich seines 500. Todestages wurde ihm hier im Jahre 1960 ein Denkmal errichtet.
Praça Infante Dom Henrique
The „Praça Infante Dom Henrique“ is a square in Lagos and rich in history. It got its name of Henry the Navigator, who started his journeys of discovery in Lagos. On the occasion of his 500 years of death, a statue was built at this square in 1960.

São Gonçalo de Lagos ist ein portugiesischer Heiliger aus dem 14. Jahrhundert. Er gilt als Schutzpatron der Seeleute und wird besonders von den Fischern der Algarve verehrt.

Castelo dos Governadores
Unmittelbar an der Hafeneinfahrt befinden sich die Überreste der Burganlage „Castelo dos Governadores“. Erstaunlich gut erhalten sind das mächtige Stadttor sowie die südliche Stadtmauer.

Located right next to the harbor entrance are the remains of the castle „Castelo dos Governadores“. Especially the massive city gate and the southern city wall are in a good condition.
Forte da Ponta da Bandeira
Ebenfalls unmittelbar an der Hafeneinfahrt befindet sich das „Forte da Ponta da Bandeira“. Dieses Fort wurde Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts zur Verteidigung der Stadt errichtet und beherbergt heute eine interessante Ausstellung über die Entdeckungen und Eroberungen der portugiesischen Seefahrer.

The fortress „Forte da Ponta da Bandeira“ is also located right next to the harbor entrance. It was built in the end of the 17th century to defend the city. Today, it hosts an interesting exhibition on the discoveries and conquests of the Portuguese seafarers.
Strände
In direkter Nähe zum Stadtzentrum befinden sich zahlreiche Strände.
Der größte von ihnen ist der Meia Praia. Er beginnt im Südosten von Lagos und hat eine Länge von 5 Kilometern.
Der Praia da Batata ist der Stadtstrand von Lagos. Er befindet sich unmittelbar neben dem Forte da Ponta da Bandeira.
Etwas südlich von Lagos liegen die zwei beeindruckendsten Strände. Der Praia Dona Ana und der Praia do Camilo. Sie sind problemlos in 10 Min zu Fuß erreichbar und bieten Dir kristallklares Wasser sowie eine eindrucksvolle Felsenkulisse.

Beaches
There are numerous beaches close to the city center.
The largest one is the Meia Praia. It begins in the southeast of Lagos and has a length of 5 kilometers.
The Praia da Batata is the city beach of Lagos. It is located right next to the Forte da Ponta da Bandeira.
The two most impressive beaches are located south of Lagos. The Praia Dona Ana and the Praia do Camilo. They offer crystal clear water, a spectacular cliff scenery and you can easily reach them within 10 minutes by foot.
Einige sehenswerte Ausflugsziele
Ponta da Piedade
Die Ponta da Piedade ist die schönste Felsformation der Algarve. Erkunde den Felsengarten am südlichen Stadtrand von Lagos zu Fuß und erlebe die durch Wasser und Wind zerklüftete rot-gelbe Felslandschaft mit ihren saftig grünen Ebenen hautnah!
Silves
Die Stadt Silves beeindruckt mit ihrer historischen Vergangenheit. Im Mittelalter war Silves der am stärksten befestigte und meist umkämpfte Ort der Algarve. Noch heute zeugen die mächtigen Überreste der hoch über der Stadt thronenden rötlichen Burg Castelo dos Mouros von dieser Zeit.
Cabo de São Vicente
Das Cabo de São Vicente ist der südwestlichste Punkt Europas. Sobald die Sonne am Horizont des Atlantiks zu versinken beginnt, wird das windumtoste Kap mit seiner kleinen Festung und dem Leuchtturm zur Pilgerstätte zahlreicher Romantiker. In Scharen versammeln sie sich am Rande der Klippen und genießen einen zauberhaften unvergesslichen Sonnenuntergang.
Portimão
Portimão ist die zweitgrößte Stadt der Algarve. Die alte Hafenstadt liegt an der Mündung des Flusses Rio Arade und ist Anlaufstelle zahlreicher großer Kreuzfahrtschiffe. Im August findet in Portimão das berühmte Festival da Sardinha (das Sardinenfest) statt.

The Ponta da Piedade is the most beautiful rock formation in the Algarve. This natural spectacle at the southern city outskirts of Lagos was shaped by water and wind. Explore it by foot and experience the red-yellow rocky landscape with its rich green plateaus from up close!

Silves
The city of Silves impresses with its historic past. In the medieval ages, Silves was the most fortified and the most important battleground in the Algarve. Until today, the massive remnants of the reddish castle Castelo dos Mouros are towering above the city and are witness of that past time.
Cabo de São Vicente
The Cabo de São Vicente is located at the southwestern point of Europe. When the sun is setting on the horizon of the Atlantic, the windswept cape with its small fortress and lighthouse becomes a place of pilgrimage for romantics. They gather at the edges of the cliff and enjoy the magical and unforgettable sunset.
Portimão
Portimão is the second largest city of the Algarve. This old harbor town is located at the estuary of the river Rio Arade and is a port of call for numerous big cruise ships. In August, the famous Festival da Sardinha (the sardine festival) is taking place in Portimão.
