Vienna, the capital city of Austria, is one of the most visited cities in Europe. Due to its central location in Europe, Vienna has always played a special role throughout history. Especially in the 19th century, the city on the Danube River gained cultural and political influence. Today, historical buildings in baroque and art nouveau style characterize the cityscape. It’s not only Vienna’s architecture but also the traditional coffee house culture that will take you back in time while walking around.

Karlskirche
Die Karlskirche ist eine der bedeutendsten barocken Kirchenbauten nördlich der Alpen. Kaiser Karl VI lies sie in der ersten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts erbauen. Zurzeit führt im Inneren der Kirche ein Panoramalift hinauf in die Kuppel. In 32 Meter Höhe ist es somit möglich die Kuppelfresken aus nächster Nähe zu betrachten.
Karlskirche
The Karlskirche is one of the most important baroque churches north of the Alps. Emperor Charles VI commissioned the construction of the church in the first half of the 18th century. Currently, there is a panoramic elevator inside the church. It takes you up to 32 meters. Up there, you are able to look at the dome fresco from up close.
Staatsoper
Die Wiener Staatsoper zählt zu den bekanntesten Opernhäusern der Welt. Mit der Premiere des Stücks „Don Giovanni“ von Mozart wurde sie am 25. Mai 1869 in Anwesenheit von Kaiser Franz Joseph und Kaiserin Elisabeth („Sisi“ / „Sissi“) feierlich eröffnet. Eine international bekannte Veranstaltung in der Wiener Staatsoper ist der Wiener Opernball, welcher alljährlich am letzten Donnerstag im Fasching stattfindet.
Vienna State Opera
The Vienna State Opera is one of the world’s most famous opera houses. It was officially opened on May 25, 1869 with the premiere of Mozart’s „Don Giovanni“. Emperor Franz Josef and Empress Elisabeth („Sisi“ / „Sissi“) were present. An internationally renowned event is the Vienna Opera Ball. It takes place annually on the last Thursday in „Fasching“.
Stephansdom
Im Zentrum der Wiener Altstadt steht der Stephansdom. Er ist das Wahrzeichen Wiens und eines der wichtigsten gotischen Bauwerke Österreichs. Die Anfänge des Doms gehen auf das Jahr 1137 zurück. In den nachfolgenden Jahrhunderten wurde er mehrfach umgebaut und erweitert. Heute ist der Stephansdom 107 Meter lang, 34 Meter breit und besitzt 4 Türme. Der Höchste von ihnen ist der 136,4 Meter hohe Südturm. Der Nordturm wurde nie fertig gestellt. Er ist lediglich 68 Meter hoch.
Im ehemaligen Österreich-Ungarn gab es die Vorschrift, dass keine Kirche höher sein darf als der Südturm des Wiener Stephansdoms.
St. Stephen’s Cathedral
The St. Stephen’s Cathedral is located in the historical center of Vienna. It is the landmark of the city and one of Austria’s most important gothic buildings. The beginnings of the cathedral date back to the year 1137. It was modified and extended several times in the following centuries. Today, the St. Stephen’s Cathedral is 107 meters long, 34 meters wide and has 4 towers. Its highest is the 136,4 meters tall south tower. The north tower was never finished. It is only 68 meters tall.
In the former Austro-Hungarian Empire it was not allowed to build a church taller than the southern tower of the St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna.
Hofburg
Ein Rundgang durch die Hofburg darf bei keinem Wienbesuch fehlen. Die weitläufige Burganlage im Herzen von Wien war bis 1918 die Residenz der Habsburger, den österreichischen Landesfürsten. Die mittelalterliche befestigte Burganlage des 13. Jahrhunderts, genannt alte Burg, wurde durch jeden regierenden Kaiser um einen neuen Trakt oder Flügel erweitert, sodass die Hofburg zu einer „Stadt in der Stadt“ heranwuchs. Auf einer Fläche von 240.000 Quadratmetern befinden sich nun 18 Trakte mit 2600 Räumen und 19 Höfe. Seit 1945 ist die Hofburg der Amtssitz des Österreichischen Bundespräsidenten. Des Weiteren sind in ihr ein großer Teil der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek, die Spanische Hofreitschule und verschiedene Museen untergebracht.
Hofburg Palace
When visiting Vienna, a tour in the Hofburg Palace should not be missed. Till 1918, the spacious castle complex in the heart of Vienna was the residence of the Austrian monarchs, the Habsburg Family. The medieval fortified castle from the 13th century, the so-called „old fortress“, was extended with additional wings by every ruling emperor. So the Hofburg Palace grew to a „city within the city“. Today, the 240.000 square meters Hofburg Palace offers 18 wings, 2600 rooms and 19 courtyards. Since 1945, the Hofburg Palace is the official residence and workplace of the President of Austria. Furthermore, it houses the Austrian National Library, the Spanish Riding School and various museums.
Rathaus
Das Wiener Rathaus ist eines von vielen historischen Bauwerken entlang der prachtvollen Ringstraße. Es wurde von 1872 bis 1883 im Stil der Neogotik errichtet und besitzt einen 98 Meter hohen Turm in der Mitte der Vorderfront. Auf der Spitze dieses Turmes thront der „Rathausmann“, eine 3,4 Meter hohe Kupferfigur. Umgeben wird das Rathaus vom 40.000 Quadratmeter großen Rathauspark, welcher bereits 1873 fertig gestellt wurde. Auf dem Rathausplatz vor dem Rathaus finden jährlich zahlreiche Veranstaltung, wie zum Beispiel das Film Festival, der Christkindlmarkt oder der Wiener Eistraum, statt.
Vienna City Hall
The Vienna City Hall is one of many historical buildings along the magnificent Ringstraße. It was built from 1872 to 1883 in a Neo-Gothic style and features a tower with a high of 98 meters in the middle of the front facade. On top of the tower thrones the „Rathausmann“, a copper statuette with a high of 3,4 meters. The Vienna City Hall is surrounded by the 40.000 square meter „Rathauspark“, which was already finished in 1873. Each year, the „Rathausplatz“ in front of the Vienna City Hall hosts several events like the film festival, the Christmas market or the „Wiener Eistraum“.
Burgtheater
Gegenüber dem Wiener Rathaus steht seit 1888 eine der bedeutendsten Bühnen Europas: Das Burgtheater. Sein Äußeres wurde in den Formen der italienischen Hochrenaissance gestaltet, seine Innenausstattung ist dagegen von barocken Elementen geprägt. Das Burgtheater ist Österreichs Nationaltheater und bietet 1340 Zuschauern Platz.

Since 1888, one of the most important theaters in Europe is situated opposite the Vienna City Hall: The Burgtheater. Its exterior was designed in the style of the Italian High Renaissance, however, its interior is characterized by elements of the baroque. The Burgtheater is the Austrian National Theatre and provides space for 1340 spectators.
Parlamentsgebäude
Geht man entlang der Ringstraße, zieht ein weiteres wichtiges und eindrucksvolles Bauwerk die Blicke auf sich. Das Parlamentsgebäude. Errichtet wurde es von 1874 bis 1883 im neoklassizistischen Stil mit Gestaltungselementen aus der römischen und griechischen Geschichte. 15 Jahre nach der Fertigstellung des Parlamentsgebäudes wurde der Pallas-Athene-Brunnen auf dem Vorplatz des Gebäudes errichtet. Er zeigt eine Abbildung der Pallas Athene, die griechische Göttin der Weisheit.
Austrian Parliament Building
The Austrian Parliament Building is another important and impressive building that attracts attention when walking along the Ringstraße. It was built from 1874 to 1883 in a neoclassical style with design elements from the Greek and Roman history. The Pallas Athene Fountain in front of the building was erected 15 years after the completion of the Austrian Parliament Building. It shows a figure of the Pallas Athene, the geek goddess of wisdom.
Wurstelprater
Zwischen Innenstadt und Donau befindet sich der bekannteste Vergnügungspark Österreichs. Der Wurstelprater. Von Ortsfremden wird er meist nur „Prater“ genannt, da er sich im „Prater“, einer weitläufigen Parkanlage entlang der Donau, befindet. Seine Anfänge hatte der Wurstelprater zwischen dem 18. und 19. Jahrhundert. Das Wiener Riesenrad, das bekannteste Fahrgeschäft Wiens, eröffnete hier im Jahre 1897. 1933 wurde ebenfalls hier die weltweit erste Geisterbahn in Betrieb genommen.

Wurstelprater
Austria’s world-famous amusement park „Wurstelprater“ is located between the city centre and the Danube River. Nonlocal people often call the amusement park „Prater“ because it is situated in the Wiener Prater, an extensive park along the Danube River. The Wurstelprater started already between the 18th and 19th century. The „Wiener Riesenrad“, its most famous ride, opened up in 1897. Close by, the world-first ghost train ride had been put into operation in 1933.
There is no entrance fee to get into the park!
Wien Hauptbahnhof
Der im Jahr 2014 neu eröffnete Wiener Hauptbahnhof ist der meistfrequentierte Fernbahnhof Österreichs. Unterhalb der Gleisanlagen befindet sich die Bahnhofshalle und die sogenannte „BahnhofCity“, ein 20.000 Quadratmeter großes Einkaufszentrum. Von außen besticht der Bahnhof durch seine kantige Architektur, welche sich jedoch problemlos in die modern gestaltete Umgebung eingliedert.
Vienna Central Station
The new Vienna Central Station is the busiest long-distance train station of Austria. It was officially opened in 2014. Below the railway tracks, you will find the station concourse and the so-called „BahnhofCity“, a 20.000 square meter shopping mall. The edgy architecture of the central station stands out, but it fits into the modern designed surroundings without any problems.
